Q: Why clean your siding?
A: Cleaning removes oxidation, dirt, mildew and pollutants that attack the finish and is proven to extend its appearance for years. Aluminum siding is a soft finish (paint on metal) that will need replacing or repainting in the not too distant future. Most vinyl siding is builders grade, with a dull finish and can even become somewhat powdery and is prone to cracking and staining.
Q: How often should your siding be cleaned?
A: This depends on environmental conditions such as shady areas, which promote mildew and moss, also pollution and construction dirt. Cleaning every few years will increase its life expectancy considerably.
Q: What cleaning process is recommended by siding manufacturers?
A: Hand scrubbing can be too abrasive. Moderate pressure hot/warm water incorporating with mild biodegradable detergents is the safest method for all siding.
Q: Can stains be removed, such as egg or other organic substances?
A: Many stains can be removed, but remember this is little more than a painted surface (aluminum) and is somewhat absorbent. We find that about 80% are removed successfully. Aluminum siding that is always in shade or at the top near overhangs may look brownish after cleaning due to oxidation of the metal under the finish. Bee waste is difficult or impossible to remove.
Q: Will my vinyl siding ever stain?
A: Contrary to popular belief vinyl can and does stain but we see a much smaller occurrence than with aluminum siding. Do not allow plants or trees to touch siding, they will mark the finish!
Q: Which siding is the best -- aluminum or vinyl?
A: Vinyl will last longer because the color is solid, not painted on, but vinyl attracts mildew and dirt more because of its almost sticky and grainy surface.
Q: What can I do if my siding has extensive deterioration or staining?
A: You can replace it or after a detailed cleaning, it can be painted. Painting, if prepared properly, will last far longer than wood siding since there is no moisture transfer and is far less expensive than replacement. When done professionally you can expect to double the life expectancy from painting when compared to other surfaces.
